Know your area’s risk for storms, including winter storms. Extreme weather can leave you without utilities for an extended time.
Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Try to have a three-day supply of water, dried or canned foods, and other essentials. Keep in mind each person’s needs, including medication and remember your pets. Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights.
Check your doors, windows, and walls for openings that could allow water to penetrate. Make sure you can keep out the cold weather with insulation and weather stripping and protect your pipes from freezing.
Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups. Make sure you have changed the old batteries with new ones before the winter season begins.
Keep your gutters clean to prevent roof damage and flooding inside your home.
Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of possible freezing weather or storms. Sign up for your community warning system or use a weather radio that will provide emergency alerts.
Have an emergency supply kit for your car. Make sure you have jumper cables, a flashlight, some warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. Remember to keep your gas tank full.
