Water damage is one of many issues we don’t want to experience in our home, but left unintended can create other problems such as mold and bacterial growth which can cause potential health effects.
As a homeowner, you should look out for problems, such as water and address them as soon as possible. The more water that comes thru the materials, the more damage it can cause.
Here are a few ways to look for water damage:
- Check wood and tile floors for cracking, buckling or warping. Carpet can have damp spots or have an odor of mold or dampness.
- Stains on the floor around the toilet, tub or sink can be a sign of water. Walls and ceiling stains can indicate a leaking pipe or leak from outside. Drywall can be soft, soggy or cracked. Paint can peel once drywall is wet.
- Shingles on the roof may be cracked or missing. There can be broken or missing flashing. Gutters and downspouts can be clogged causing overflows that may pool the water and will not move it away from the house.
- Check your water heater for signs of water. Rust or dark spots on the floor can indicate a leak.
- Look for signs of mold around your home. Sometimes you can smell the mold without seeing it.
